At least nine people were killed and several others abducted in a brutal armed attack in Nigeria’s northwestern Zamfara State over the weekend, according to local reports.
The assault, carried out by gunmen locally referred to as “bandits,” occurred on Friday, marking another escalation in the region’s ongoing violence. Residents say such armed gangs have terrorized communities for years, kidnapping thousands and killing hundreds.
Wave of Violence Targets Civilians
Bandit groups frequently raid villages, farms, and schools, abducting civilians for ransom. In 2021, more than 300 girls were kidnapped from a school in Zamfara before being released following negotiations and a ransom payment.
Despite repeated military operations, Nigerian security forces have struggled to curb the violence. The latest attack underscores the persistent insecurity plaguing the northwest, where armed gangs exploit weak governance and vast ungoverned spaces.
Calls for Stronger Action
The Nigerian military has launched counteroffensives, but the bandits continue to evade large-scale crackdowns. Analysts warn that without improved intelligence and community protection measures, the cycle of violence will persist.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the latest attack, but local leaders are urging the federal government to intensify efforts to protect civilians.
As the death toll rises, fear grips Zamfara’s rural communities, with many residents fleeing their homes in search of safety.
