Seshego – A high-stakes by-election is taking place today in Ward 13 under the Polokwane Municipality, with the South African Communist Party (SACP) making history by contesting against its long-time alliance partner, the African National Congress (ANC). The ward, previously held by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), became vacant after the expulsion of an EFF councillor due to misconduct.

Political Showdown in Seshego

The by-election has drawn significant attention as it could signal shifting political dynamics ahead of next year’s local government elections. The SACP’s decision to stand against the ANC marks a rare break in their alliance, adding tension to an already competitive race. Meanwhile, the EFF will be fighting to retain the seat it lost following the removal of its former councillor, Mafiwa Leballo, over misconduct charges.

IEC Ready for Smooth Voting Process

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Limpopo has confirmed that all systems are in place for a smooth electoral process. Provincial Electoral Officer Nkaro Mateta stated that voting stations opened at 7:00 AM and will close at 9:00 PM to accommodate working voters.

“We are fully prepared,” Mateta said. “Our voter management devices performed well during yesterday’s special votes, and we encourage all registered voters to participate.”

Of the approximately 9,000 registered voters in the ward, 78% of those who applied for home visits cast their ballots during special voting, while 62% visited stations. The IEC has urged remaining voters to turn out in full force.

A Bellwether for 2026 Local Elections?

Political analysts suggest that this by-election could serve as an early indicator of voter sentiment before the 2026 local government polls. The SACP’s is set to contest for the councillor position, setting the stage for a potential realignment in Limpopo’s political landscape.

It was noted, “This by-election is instructive—it’s not just about filling a vacant seat but also testing the strength of parties ahead of a crucial election year.”

Results Expected Soon

Voting will conclude tonight, with results expected by tomorrow morning. The outcome will determine whether the EFF can reclaim its seat or if the ANC or SACP will make gains in this fiercely contested ward.

As voters head to the polls, all eyes remain on Seshego, where today’s results could reshape Limpopo’s political future.
