Civil society groups, private security personnel, and concerned citizens took to the streets of Durban yesterday in a solidarity march under the banner #HandsOffMkhwanazi, demanding protection for Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi following his explosive allegations of political interference in policing.
The protest, assembling outside Kings Park Stadium, comes just over a week after Mkhwanazi’s claims sparked national controversy. Demonstrators view him as a whistleblower facing undue pressure and are calling on the government to address his allegations transparently.
Groundswell of Support
A diverse turnout was noted, including private security firms and political factions. Wesley of Yin-Yang Tactical, representing multiple security companies, voiced frustration with systemic corruption: “Our country doesn’t have a racism problem—it has a corruption problem. We stand 100% behind General Mkhwanazi.”
Protesters expressed skepticism about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent announcement of a commission of inquiry into the allegations, arguing for swifter action. “He shouldn’t be on special leave; he should be suspended. The evidence is there—let’s speed up the process,” Wesley insisted.
Police Presence and Peaceful Assembly
While thousands were expected to join, police maintained a heavy but calm presence to ensure safety. Organizers emphasized the march’s peaceful nature, with no incidents reported.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has cautiously welcomed the inquiry, but marchers demand accountability for those implicated, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. One protester, echoing widespread sentiment, stated: “If we don’t back the man fighting for this country, who will?”
