Political parties contesting the upcoming by-election in Ward 1 of the Sol Plaatje Municipality have accused the African National Congress (ANC) of using government resources to sway voters in its favor. The allegations come amid a flurry of government-led service delivery initiatives in the area over the past month.
Opposition parties claim that the ANC has strategically rolled out projects—including a provincial youth event, a housing project launch, a cleaning and greening campaign, and the introduction of a basic education employment fund—all timed ahead of the July 23 by-election. They argue that this is a deliberate tactic to blur the lines between party campaigning and government duties.
Opposition Outcry
A coalition of opposition parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has condemned the move, labeling it an abuse of state resources.
“Once I gather all relevant information and proof, I will take this matter to the Public Service Commission to ensure it is addressed,” said one opposition representative. “A fair political party would not use state resources to campaign against others.”
An EFF official added, “We have seen this pattern before—whenever there’s a by-election, state machinery is unleashed to undermine opposition parties, particularly in hung councils.”
ANC Denies Wrongdoing
The ANC in the Northern Cape has dismissed the allegations, insisting that service delivery is an ongoing priority, not just an election tactic.
“It’s unfair to suggest we only deliver services during by-elections,” said an ANC provincial representative. “Our government deployees work continuously for the people. The timing may coincide, but our commitment to service is not tied to elections.”
Analyst Warns Against Political “Theatrics”
Political analysts have urged voters to scrutinize the motives behind sudden service delivery spikes.
“Communities should not be swayed by last-minute projects,” said one analyst. “South Africans must use their votes to hold parties accountable. If a party disrespects them, the ballot is their tool for change.”
High Stakes in a Hung Council
The Sol Plaatje Municipality remains a hung council, making the Ward 1 by-election crucial for political leverage. With voting set for July 23, tensions are rising as parties ramp up campaigns amid allegations of unfair advantage.
As the debate over state resources and election ethics intensifies, the outcome may hinge on whether voters reward service delivery—or penalize what opponents call opportunistic campaigning.
