KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has called for a thorough investigation into serious allegations made by the province’s police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, against the national police minister and other senior officers.
Ntuli emphasized that while the provincial government fully supports Mkhwanazi’s efforts in combating crime, the claims cannot be ignored.
“There is a need to consider the information shared by Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi,” Ntuli stated. “The allegations are of a serious nature, and further investigation is necessary.”
The premier acknowledged the police’s strong performance in KwaZulu-Natal under Mkhwanazi’s leadership but stressed that serious accusations must be addressed transparently.
“As the government of KwaZulu-Natal, we believe the police are doing good work in the province, including under his leadership. However, that does not mean such serious allegations should be overlooked,” Ntuli said.
While the matter falls under national jurisdiction, Ntuli expressed hope that the claims would receive the urgent attention they demand.
No further details about the nature of the allegations were disclosed. The call for an investigation raises questions about potential tensions within South Africa’s law enforcement leadership.
