Ethekwini Municipal Employee Assassinated in KZN Shooting

A 51-year-old Ethekwini Municipal employee was gunned down this afternoon while traveling home to Mhlasini in a brazen assassination. The victim, a Deputy Superintendent at the Department of Roads & Stormwater, was ambushed by armed assailants in Redcliffe.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), multiple distress calls were received at 18:51 after gunmen opened fire on a blue Hyundai i10 at the intersection of Hazelmere Drive and Quarry Road. Reaction officers and paramedics rushed to the scene, where they found the driver fatally wounded, slumped in his seat. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared deceased before emergency responders could intervene.

Two other occupants—the deceased’s 32-year-old girlfriend and a male colleague—were also in the vehicle during the attack. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to her buttocks, while the male passenger was grazed by a bullet on his back. Both managed to escape the vehicle and flee as the assailants continued firing.

Preliminary reports indicate that three men, standing on the roadside, suddenly opened fire as the car passed by. The attackers reportedly walked toward the vehicle while shooting at the driver before fleeing on foot. Thirteen spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the motive behind the killing, with no arrests made thus far. The incident has raised concerns over targeted attacks in the area, as police work to track down the suspects.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
