The family of Luke Edwards, a 32-year-old man who died under suspicious circumstances in early April, is seeking answers as police investigate his alleged assault and subsequent death near a rehabilitation center and retirement home.
Edwards had been admitted to the Tetelestai Recovery Centre in Toti on a voluntary basis after displaying erratic behavior linked to marijuana use. According to his family, he had become aggressive and psychotic, prompting his transfer to the facility on April 9.
Just days after his admission, his family received the devastating news that his body had been discovered a few meters away from the rehab center—allegedly on the premises of the Residential Mooi Hawens Senior Lifestyle Centre, a nearby retirement home.
Alleged Assault and Arrests
Disturbing claims suggest Edwards may have been violently attacked before his death. His family expressed outrage, with one relative stating, “To beat somebody like a pack of wolves, with five against one, is horrific.”
Police later arrested four suspects, believed to be resident patients at the rehab center. They appeared in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court, but their case was postponed to July 4 due to logistical delays and ongoing investigations.
The suspects’ legal representative acknowledged disputes in the case’s details, stating, “At this stage, it’s really early. There seems to be definitely disputes of fact.”
Retirement Home Responds
Residential Mooi Hawens Senior Lifestyle Centre, where Edwards’ body was allegedly found, suggested he may have been assaulted elsewhere and sought refuge on their property.
As the investigation continues, Edwards’ family remains desperate for justice. “If they are guilty, they must have a jail sentence for as long as the court can give,” a family member said.
Authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause of death, leaving the grieving family in anguish as they await answers.
