The Pietermaritzburg High Court is set to sentence Sibusiso Ncengwa, one of the men implicated in the 2017 murder of former ANC Youth League Secretary-General Sindiso Magaqa.
Ncengwa pleaded guilty to charges including Magaqa’s murder, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property. The case, which has dragged on for nearly seven years, has drawn significant public and political attention, with many calling for justice for the slain activist.
Plea and Separation of Trials
On June 6, Ncengwa made a Section 220 admission in court, formally acknowledging his role in the crimes outlined in the state’s indictment. The court accepted his plea, separating his case from that of the two remaining accused, whose trial is expected to continue in October.
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, an NPA spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, confirmed that Ncengwa’s sentencing would proceed independently. She noted that further investigations may follow regarding allegations made by Ncengwa during his plea.
Calls for Justice and Closure
The murder of Magaqa, a prominent ANC figure, has been a source of prolonged anguish for his family and political allies. ANC members were expected to attend the court proceedings in solidarity, though initial reports indicated only a sparse presence.
SABC News reporter Jade Pulser, reporting outside the court, highlighted the significance of the sentencing for the family. “Since 2017, many have been waiting for justice,” Pulser said. “With one suspect pleading guilty, this could bring some measure of closure.”
Awaiting Sentencing
The court was scheduled to resume at 10:00, but proceedings had not yet begun at the time of reporting. The case remains under close watch, with further developments expected as the legal process unfolds.
Magaqa’s killing was part of a wave of political violence in KwaZulu-Natal, raising concerns over the safety of local leaders. His family and supporters hope that Ncengwa’s sentencing will mark a step toward accountability in a case that has lingered for years.
