The Msunduzi Ratepayers Association and opposition parties are intensifying pressure on the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government to accelerate its investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and maladministration against Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla.
The mayor faces accusations of bypassing due processes in key decisions, including the irregular awarding of contracts and unauthorized use of municipal funds. These allegations have raised serious concerns about governance and service delivery in the embattled Msunduzi Municipality, which has been under provincial administration for years.
Longstanding Governance Concerns
The municipality has been plagued by allegations of corruption and mismanagement, leading to its prolonged administration by the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Department. Critics argue that these governance failures have severely impacted service delivery, leaving residents without essential services.
Opposition parties have now filed a motion of no confidence against Mayor Thebolla, citing his alleged involvement in financial misconduct. The calls for accountability gained momentum after a suspended municipal manager made damning remarks last year, further implicating the mayor in irregularities.
Investigation Blocked?
Anthony from the Msunduzi Ratepayers Association expressed alarm over the apparent obstruction of investigations into the mayor.
“The council has opposed the actual investigation into the mayor,” Anthony said. “If the mayor has nothing to hide, we assume he would support this probe to clear his name.”
The association has welcomed CoGTA’s intervention under Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act, which allows for a forensic investigation into the municipality. However, delays and alleged blockages have raised questions about transparency and accountability within the council.
Demand for Accountability
Residents and opposition leaders are demanding swift action, warning that further delays will only deepen the municipality’s crises.
“We are looking forward to the forensic investigation, which we believe will uncover widespread corruption,” Anthony added.
As pressure mounts, all eyes are on the provincial government to determine whether Mayor Thebolla will face scrutiny or if political interference will continue to stall accountability efforts.
