The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has opened yet another mass murder docket after seven men were gunned down in the early hours of Saturday morning. This latest incident brings the number of people killed in mass murders on the Cape Flats to 13 in just a matter of days.

A Brutal Crime Scene

The attack took place in a small backyard dwelling where victims had no chance to escape as armed assailants stormed in. The crime scene, described as “explicit,” was marked by pools of blood on the floor and heavy splatter on walls, windows, and curtains. Authorities have withheld graphic images from the public.

Police have not yet determined a motive, but past mass murders in the area have been linked to taxi violence, extortion, or gang conflicts. Provincial SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa stated, “At this stage, we cannot rule out revenge or a hit, but it appears targeted given how the victims were singled out.”

Minister Mchunu: “Cape Flats Have Become Killing Fields”

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu condemned the surge in violence, declaring that the Cape Flats have turned into the “killing fields of the Western Cape.” He emphasized that police must not normalize such brutality and called for a targeted approach to combat crime.

Operation Shanela 2, a specialized policing initiative, has been launched to address the crisis. However, residents remain fearful, with community members pleading for government intervention.

“Crime is rife here—people are shot, killed, and raped. We need serious help,” said one local resident.

Police Seek Key Witnesses

Authorities are searching for two men, Linde Madolo and Loyiso Matinisi, who may have crucial information about the murders. While not considered suspects at this stage, SAPS has urged the public to come forward with any details on their whereabouts or the incident.

This latest mass killing follows another horrific attack earlier this week, where three people were stoned to death in a suspected vigilante killing, and three others were shot in an apparent hijacking.

Appeal for Public Assistance

SAPS has called on anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.

As the Western Cape grapples with escalating violence, pressure mounts on law enforcement to restore order before more lives are lost.
