
Firefighters battled a large fire at the South African Breweries (SAB) depot south of Johannesburg yestrday. Emergency services confirmed that the blaze started when nearby grass caught fire before spreading to wooden crates at the depot.
No Injuries Reported, Workers Evacuated
As of now, no injuries have been reported. Workers at the depot were safely evacuated as a precautionary measure. Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) stated that strong winds have made firefighting efforts difficult, causing the flames to spread rapidly.

Thick black smoke was visible from as far as the M1 freeway.
“The fire was smaller when we first arrived, but the winds have intensified it,” the reporter said. “Firefighters are struggling to contain it, but they are doing everything they can.”
Workers at the depot told reporters they were unsure how the fire started, but EMS confirmed that it originated from burning grass before reaching the crates.
Residents Urged to Stay Clear
Authorities have advised residents to avoid the area as a safety precaution. While the fire is not near residential zones, heavy smoke may affect visibility on nearby roads. Traffic remains open, but emergency crews have cordoned off the immediate vicinity.
