The 7th Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit & Challenge officially launched yesterday at the Midrand Conference Centre, bringing together young entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and stakeholders to foster innovation and employment opportunities in the tourism sector.
Hosted by South African Tourism and convened by Africa Tourism Partners, the three-day summit aims to empower young Africans by enhancing their participation in tourism, hospitality, and aviation industries. The event, which has previously been held in Ghana, Namibia, Rwanda, and South Africa, focuses on youth entrepreneurship, employability, and market access across the continent.
Bridging the Gap for Young Talent
The importance of the event in addressing youth unemployment and encouraging innovation in tourism. Kwakye Donkor, CEO of Africa Tourism Partners, emphasized the summit’s role in ensuring young professionals advance beyond entry-level roles.
“We want young people to grow into senior management positions, not just remain as waiters or cleaners,” Donkor stated. “Through mentorship, networking, and our Africa Tourism Innovation Hub, we provide platforms for youth to access markets and collaborate with major industry players.”
Pan-African Collaboration and Market Access
The summit features panel discussions, business-to-business (B2B) networking sessions, and one-on-one engagements with industry leaders. Participants from across Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, and Namibia, will explore solutions to challenges such as market penetration and partnerships with established brands.
Donkor also highlighted the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in expanding opportunities for young entrepreneurs, enabling cross-border collaboration and economic growth in the tourism sector.
Rebuilding Post-Pandemic Tourism
With the tourism industry still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the summit serves as a critical platform for revitalizing the sector. Discussions will focus on strategies to restore tourism to pre-pandemic levels while integrating youth-driven innovation.
The event concludes on Friday, with a dedicated session for young attendees to pitch ideas and connect directly with potential investors and mentors.
