Eight suspects, aged between 16 and 27, are set to appear in the KwaNobuhle Magistrates’ Court today in connection with the brutal murder of two teenage girls in Kariega (formerly Uitenhage).

The victims, identified as high school learners, were found burned in the Khayelitsha Township in KwaNobuhle last Wednesday morning. The discovery was made by community members, sparking outrage and calls for justice.

Police swiftly launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of eight young men on Thursday. Community members expressed frustration over rising crime in the area, citing poor infrastructure, non-functional streetlights, and insufficient policing as contributing factors.

Residents also raised concerns about the lack of adequate police resources, with only one station serving approximately eight surrounding areas in KwaNobuhle. Despite previous appeals for satellite police stations—including during a visit by Police Minister Bheki Cele last year—no action has been taken.

The court proceedings were initially scheduled to take place at the Guam Magistrate’s Court but were later moved to Kariega. Community members, including activist Mr. Tamang, have mobilized to support the victims’ families and attend the hearing despite the distance.

The case has drawn significant attention as authorities work to ensure justice for the slain teenagers. Further updates are expected as the court session unfolds.
