Dozens of South Africans gathered outside the US Consulate in Sandton on Thursday, chanting “Iran, do it—the world is with you!” in a protest denouncing American support for Israel amid escalating Middle East tensions.

The demonstration, which drew participants of all ages—including men, women, and children—saw protesters voicing support for Iran and Palestine while condemning what they described as “global systems of oppression.” Many held placards reading “Resistance against occupation can never be condemned” and “Israel apartheid and genocide funded and supported by the USA.”

A Message Against “Double Standards”

Speaking at the protest, Dr. Zahid, a demonstrator, accused the US and Israel of being “the same identity,” alleging that Israel acts as an extension of American power. He highlighted Iran’s historical support for anti-apartheid movements in South Africa and its opposition to Israeli policies in Palestine.

“The same way Iran supported the anti-apartheid struggle here, it has stood with Palestine,” Dr. Zahid said. “Now, Iran is being punished for resisting imperialism.”

He dismissed Western concerns over Iran’s nuclear program, insisting the country adheres to international non-proliferation agreements. Instead, he redirected criticism toward Israel, which he claimed possesses nuclear weapons while facing no accountability for regional aggression.

Global Solidarity Against US-Israel Alliance

The protest in Sandton mirrored demonstrations in other major cities, including London, Paris, and Toronto, as part of a coordinated global response to recent Middle East hostilities. Demonstrators expressed outrage over civilian casualties in Gaza and Iran, accusing the US of enabling Israeli military actions.

“After two years of destruction in Gaza, Iran is now teaching Israel a lesson,” Dr. Zahid said. “For the first time, Israelis are experiencing the fear of invasion.”

Symbolic Displays of Defiance

Protesters burned an effigy of US President Donald Trump, labeling him a “devil” in graffiti on his image. The gathering underscored deepening anti-American sentiment among some South African activists, who view US foreign policy as complicit in Middle Eastern conflicts.

As tensions persist, the demonstration signals growing international backlash against Washington’s stance on Israel—with South African voices adding to the chorus of dissent.
