Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has raised alarm over the recent surge in violent attacks targeting ward councillors, following the killing of Thulani Buthelezi, the second councillor to be fatally shot in less than two months.

Morero spoke at Buthelezi’s funeral in Naledi, Soweto, where he condemned the ongoing violence and called for urgent measures to protect local leaders. Buthelezi was attacked at his home earlier this month and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The motive behind his killing remains unclear.

“This wave of violence is deeply concerning,” Morero said. “Councillors are being attacked, killed, and their families are also at risk—particularly in townships.” He suggested that the attacks could be linked to service delivery frustrations or disputes over development projects in local wards.

With local government elections approaching next year, the safety of public officials has become a pressing issue. Morero revealed that the city has begun discussions on strengthening security for councillors, including a recent meeting with the council speaker and other leaders to explore protective measures.

Buthelezi was remembered as a dedicated leader who tirelessly served his community. As investigations continue, authorities are under increasing pressure to address the threats facing local representatives and ensure their safety.
