The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kimberley has issued a public alert regarding a new telephone scam in which fraudsters impersonate police officials to extort money from unsuspecting victims.

According to authorities, the scam involves victims receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be SAPS officers. The caller falsely informs the victim that a person known to them has been arrested and demands immediate payment, instructing the victim to deposit money via a supermarket.

SAPS has strongly emphasized that the police do not request payments from the public under any circumstances. The public is urged to refrain from making deposits, especially when instructed by unknown or suspicious callers.

Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution when engaging in online or telephonic communications. If in doubt, individuals are encouraged to verify the information directly with their bank or local police station before taking any action.

Suspicious activities can be reported through the MySAPS App or by calling the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111. In cases of extortion, the National Anti-Corruption Hotline (0800 911 011) is also available for reporting.
