South Africa is set to make history by hosting its first-ever Glamping Expo in Johannesburg, spotlighting the growing trend of luxury camping that combines eco-conscious travel with immersive outdoor experiences. The event, taking place on June 20-21 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec, aims to unite industry stakeholders, promote sustainable tourism, and boost domestic and international travel.
A Vision for Sustainable and Luxurious Travel
Gugu Sithole, CEO of Glamping Adventures and the visionary behind the expo, shared insights on the rising demand for eco-friendly and regenerative tourism.
“Glamping is about eco-conscious travel—giving back to the environment while enjoying nature in luxury,” Sithole explained. “South Africa has incredible potential with its diverse landscapes, from safari lodges to coastal retreats. Cape Town is currently the hotspot, followed by Mpumalanga and Kruger areas, but the entire country offers untapped opportunities.”
The expo will feature manufacturers of unique glamping structures (such as domes and luxury tents), panel discussions on industry trends, and research presentations to guide future growth. Government bodies, including South African Tourism, are also collaborating to support the sector.
Economic Impact and Community Involvement
A key focus of the expo is inclusivity and local empowerment. Sithole emphasized that glamping creates opportunities for rural communities, women, and youth by involving them in hospitality, artisan crafts, and heritage preservation.
“Glamping stays are often in remote areas, bringing economic benefits to nearby communities,” she said. “This isn’t just about travel—it’s about authentic, responsible tourism that uplifts locals.”
Affordability and Safety
Addressing concerns about luxury pricing, Sithole noted that glamping in South Africa caters to all budgets, from affordable stays to high-end experiences. Safety is also prioritized, with most sites located in secure game reserves and private farms.
A Global Movement Taking Root in Africa
With glamping markets in regions like the UK becoming oversaturated, South Africa’s expo positions the country as a leader in sustainable, unique travel experiences.
“The world is shifting toward eco-tourism, and South Africa is perfectly positioned to lead this movement,” Sithole said.
How to Attend
The Glamping Expo is free to the public. Visitors can register for tickets on TicketPro.co.za (search “Glamping Expo”) and explore the future of travel in Africa.
As the tourism sector continues recovering post-pandemic, this expo marks a significant step in redefining travel—blending luxury, sustainability, and community impact for a brighter future.
