Nelspruit, Mpumalanga – Three members of the White River Flying Squad have been released on R1,500 bail each after being arrested for allegedly escorting a vehicle loaded with over 100 bags of dagga (cannabis) on the N4 toll road near Matsulu.
The officers—identified as Jabulani Mbuyane, Solomon Mebo, and Lauvandre LaReservee—face charges of defeating the ends of justice and dealing in dagga. They were arrested earlier this week while in uniform and using a state vehicle.
Officers Part of Elite Crime Unit
The accused belong to a high-caliber tactical unit tasked with combating serious crimes. Despite the charges, the state did not oppose bail, noting that the officers have no prior convictions.
Two other suspects, the occupants of the dagga-loaded vehicle, were charged with drug dealing.
Case Postponed for Further Investigation
The case has been postponed to 23 July 2025 for further investigations.
History of Misconduct in Flying Squad
This is not the first time officers from the White River Flying Squad have faced criminal charges. In 2023, three members were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and explosives. They were allegedly transporting high-caliber rifles linked to a cash-in-transit heist.
Authorities Express Concern
Provincial authorities have raised alarm over the recurring misconduct within the unit.
“We are seriously concerned about the Flying Squad, as this is not the first incident where members have been caught in such situations,” said an official. “I have engaged the provincial commissioner to ensure special attention is given to this unit. While it is troubling, it is good that when they engage in unlawful acts, they are caught.”
The case continues as investigators work to build a strong prosecution. The matter will return to court on 25 July 2025.
