Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have recovered the light aircraft that went missing on Sunday afternoon, confirming the tragic deaths of all three occupants, including the pilot.
The aircraft departed from Durban’s Virginia Airport at approximately 3 PM, en route to Ladysmith in the Midlands, but never reached its destination. The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) reported that the plane was last tracked flying over Ladysmith before heading south towards Greytown.
Search Ends in Devastation
KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed the recovery of the aircraft and the deceased in a somber update.
“It is a very sad day for KwaZulu-Natal and the entire country,” Sibiya said. “The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Sipho ‘Sthe’ Duma, mandated us to work closely with the ARCC, and after an extensive search, we received the heartbreaking confirmation that all three individuals on board had tragically lost their lives.”
Victims Included Promising Young Pilot
Sibiya revealed that one of the deceased was a young, promising pilot student, whose family has been notified.
“The mother of the student pilot is devastated. This was a young, energetic leader in the aviation industry, and this loss is deeply felt,” he said.
Authorities are still in the process of contacting the families of the other victims.
Cause of Crash Under Investigation
While unconfirmed reports suggest adverse weather conditions may have played a role, Sibiya emphasized that the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) will lead the investigation.
“At this stage, we can only confirm the recovery and the fatalities. The SACAA and SAPS will determine the exact cause of the crash,” he said.
Provincial Support for Grieving Families
The provincial transport department has pledged support to the affected families, with the MEC urging compassion during this difficult time.
“We must display Ubuntu and stand with the families as they navigate this painful period,” Sibiya added.
As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided in due course.
