Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has strongly condemned an attack on officers in Westbury after residents hurled rocks and bottles at the anti-gang unit during an arrest operation. The incident occurred when police arrested a suspect found in possession of drugs, sparking violent resistance from the community.

Escalation During Stop-and-Search Operation

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, officers were conducting routine patrols in Westbury—a hotspot for gang violence—when they detained a male suspect with drugs. The situation quickly escalated as community members began assaulting police with projectiles, forcing law enforcement to retreat to avoid further confrontation.

“The police acted professionally and within the confines of the law to prevent loss of life,” said Brig. Mathe. “They had live ammunition but chose to withdraw to de-escalate the situation.”

Broader Context of Gang Violence

Westbury has long struggled with gang-related crime, prompting increased police deployments in recent months. However, tensions between residents and law enforcement remain high. Brig. Mathe noted the irony of the attack, recalling that the same community had previously demanded stronger police presence to combat drug and gang activity.

“We cannot allow our officers to be bullied while doing their jobs,” she stated. “The community cannot call for more policing and then attack officers when they make arrests.”

Separate Shooting Incident in Riverlea

The briefing also addressed a separate confrontation in Riverlea, where officers conducting a vehicle stop were fired upon by suspects in a white car. A shootout ensued, leaving one male suspect dead. Authorities are investigating whether the fatal shot came from police or the fleeing suspects.

Police Vow to Continue Operations

Despite the backlash, police leadership reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining operations in Westbury and other high-risk areas. “We will not be deterred from combating gang violence and drug trade,” Brig. Mathe emphasized.

Meanwhile, in a separate matter, the police defended their handling of student protests at Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape, denying accusations of excessive force while stressing the need to maintain public order.

Community Reactions

Local leaders in Westbury have yet to respond publicly, but the incident highlights ongoing distrust between residents and law enforcement. Police urge cooperation, warning that hostility toward officers only undermines efforts to curb crime in the area.

Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
