Barberton, Mpumalanga – The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison has deployed additional armed security personnel to the Barberton District Hospital following a violent altercation that left two people dead and others injured.

Chaotic Scene at Hospital

According to department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi, the incident began in the early hours of Sunday morning when police responded to a shootout at a local liquor outlet in Barberton. Two individuals were fatally wounded, while others were taken to the hospital for treatment.

However, tensions escalated when a group accompanying the injured stormed the hospital, demanding immediate attention for their associates. “They insisted that nurses stop treating other patients to attend to their friends,” Mmusi explained.

Ongoing Security Concerns

Mmusi confirmed that this was not an isolated incident, revealing that similar disruptions have occurred at the same hospital in the past. “We’ve had situations where conflicts from taverns or streets spill over into healthcare facilities, endangering staff and patients,” he said.

In response, the department has deployed four additional armed guards and a security vehicle to bolster hospital safety. Police are also closely monitoring the situation.

Broader Crime Challenges in Barberton

Barberton has been flagged as a high-crime area, ranking among the top 30 priority police stations in South Africa for contact crimes, including murder and assault. Mmusi emphasized the need for community cooperation to protect healthcare facilities.

Healthcare Workers Protest

The incident has further strained an already burdened healthcare system, with workers downing tools in protest over safety concerns. While discussions between unions and the provincial government are ongoing, Mmusi could not provide a definitive timeline for the resumption of normal services.

Appeal for Public Assistance

Authorities are urging anyone with information on the suspects involved in the initial shooting to come forward. Meanwhile, long-term security upgrades, including surveillance cameras and infrastructure improvements, are being considered.

As the situation remains volatile, the provincial government has assured the public that measures are in place to restore order and safeguard medical staff and patients.
