Two people have been killed and several others wounded in a violent shootout at a taxi rank in Zonkisizwe, Ekurhuleni, in what authorities suspect may be linked to ongoing taxi-related conflicts.
Details of the Attack
According to eyewitness reports and police, ten armed men in a Toyota Fortuner stormed the taxi rank early this morning, opening fire. A security guard and a member of a taxi association were fatally wounded, while others—including a female scholar transport operator—sustained injuries.
A vehicle was also torched during the chaos, with forensic teams currently combing the scene for evidence.
Police Response
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has yet to confirm whether the shooting was directly tied to taxi violence, though the location and nature of the attack have raised suspicions. Provincial Commissioner General Tommy Mthombeni is expected to arrive at the scene to provide further updates.
No arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Community Fear and Disruption
Local residents expressed fear but declined to speak on record, citing safety concerns. Crime in the area has been a persistent issue, with a recent Uber driver killing adding to tensions.
Taxi operations at the rank have been suspended, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow as investigations continue.
