Four township-based schools in Gqeberha have received a significant boost through a newly launched golf initiative. The Dan and Rose Qeqe Foundation, a non-profit organisation, donated golf clubs and balls to the schools in an effort to introduce golf as a competitive sport in underprivileged communities.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between historically disadvantaged learners and those from more privileged backgrounds. A representative from the foundation, Mr. Kuhle Teyise, explained that the programme is not just about sport but also about instilling discipline, hard work, and focus in young learners.

“Sport teaches responsibility and helps shape these children into better adults,” said Teyise. “Golf is often seen as an elite sport, but we want to show these learners that they too can excel in it and change their lives through such opportunities.”

The programme, which launched last week Friday, initially involves two individuals from each of the four selected schools. The foundation aims to ensure its sustainability by securing proper coaching and community support.

“We need to prove to funders that this initiative is making a real impact,” Teyise added. “If we do this correctly, it will benefit not just the schools but the entire community by opening up new possibilities for these children.”

The long-term vision is to expand the initiative across the Nelson Mandela Bay region, fostering both sporting talent and academic growth. With proper structure and commitment, the foundation believes golf could become a transformative force in township schools.
