A devastating fire tore through a shack in the Marikana informal settlement in, Kwa Thema Ekurhuleni early this morning, killing six members of a family and leaving a 7-year-old girl with severe burn wounds.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed that the victims—a 42-year-old mother, a 47-year-old father, and four children aged between one and 20—were burned beyond recognition. The sole survivor, the young girl, was rushed to a medical facility in critical condition.
Fire Erupted in the Dead of Night
The blaze broke out around 3:08 AM while the family was asleep. Neighbors attempted to battle the flames before emergency crews arrived and extinguished the fire. However, the intensity of the inferno left the four-roomed shack completely gutted, trapping the family under the rubble.
Ntladi described the scene as “gruesome,” with charred remains making identification nearly impossible. Authorities are relying on family members to help identify the victims, though most were unrecognizable.
No Immediate Cause Determined
The cause of the fire remains unknown, with investigations still underway. Ntladi noted that informal settlement fires often spread rapidly, but in this case, the flames were contained to a single structure due to the settlement’s spaced-out layout.
Recovery Efforts Underway
Forensic and pathology teams are working to carefully remove the bodies from the scene. The process is delicate, given the extent of the damage.
Community members and officials are reeling from the tragedy, which highlights the ongoing risks faced by residents in informal settlements, where fires pose a constant threat due to cramped living conditions and limited emergency access.
As the surviving child fights for recovery, authorities urge increased fire safety awareness in vulnerable communities to prevent future catastrophes.
