Kimberley – The Sol Plaatje Municipality has announced a five-day water shutdown scheduled from 29 May to 3 June, prompting the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) to advise businesses to stockpile water and implement contingency plans.
The shutdown is part of the municipality’s efforts to repair 16 major leaks along a 35-kilometre bulk pipeline, a critical step in reducing water losses. While the maintenance is necessary, businesses reliant on water—such as car washes, restaurants, and guest houses—are being urged to prepare for disruptions.
One local car wash owner shared his preparations: “We bought two extra JoJo tanks, so we are prepared for the shutdown. But if it lasts longer than expected, it will definitely affect us.”
NOCCI has welcomed the municipality’s proactive approach but called for additional measures to ensure hospitals, guest houses, and other essential services remain supplied. “Water tankers must be available and full, ready to assist when needed,” a NOCCI representative emphasized.
The municipality acknowledged that more shutdowns will follow as infrastructure repairs continue. Residents and businesses running out of water during the shutdown can rely on 54 water tankers stationed across Kimberley, with roving trucks on standby for refills.
This shutdown follows previous repairs that addressed 21 out of 37 leaks initially identified. With additional leaks developing since the last maintenance period, the municipality stresses the importance of long-term fixes to curb water losses.
As the shutdown coincides with the month-end period, businesses and households are encouraged to store sufficient water to minimize inconvenience.
