Sibanye-Stillwater has confirmed the safe return of all 260 employees following a mine shaft incident at its Kloof 7 operation in Westonaria, West of Johannesburg on Thursday.
The incident occurred when the skip door of the Kloof 7 sub-shaft rock winder opened unexpectedly at the loading point on Level 39, affecting operations on Levels 40, 41, and below. The company emphasized that at no point were employees at risk of injury.
Following the incident, comprehensive safety inspections and a full shaft integrity assessment were conducted, along with necessary repairs, before workers could be safely brought to the surface.
The first group of employees emerged around midday today, with the final group returning safely.
Sibanye-Stillwater has assured stakeholders that operations will remain suspended until all safety protocols are thoroughly reviewed. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
