Law enforcement agencies across the Johannesburg District conducted a series of high-intensity operations from 16 to 18 May 2025, resulting in the arrest of more than 470 suspects for various offenses. The operations included Operation Shanela, Visible Policing/Station Commander’s initiatives, High-Density operations, and ad-hoc roadblocks.
Operation Shanela Leads Multiple Arrests
During a multidisciplinary Provincial Operation Shanela in the Diepsloot policing precinct, authorities detained 52 suspects for crimes such as selling liquor without a license, undocumented immigration, and driving under the influence of alcohol. The operation was led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lt General Tommy Mthombeni, with support from the Department of Home Affairs, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Siyabangena patrollers, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and Community Policing Forums (CPF).
Visible Policing and High-Density Operations Yield Further Arrests
In coordinated Visible Policing and Station Commander’s operations across the district, an additional 123 suspects were apprehended for various offenses. Meanwhile, High-Density operations led to the arrest of 30 more suspects, including a significant bust in Meadowlands on *18 May 2025*.
An intelligence-driven raid at Mzimhlophe Hostel resulted in the arrest of a suspect found in possession of an *unlicensed firearm with filed-off serial numbers, 17 live rounds of ammunition, and a magazine*. In Dobsonville, another individual was detained for discharging a firearm in a municipal area while intoxicated.
Drug Busts and Traffic Violations
In Florida and Moroka, police arrested two suspects for dealing in drugs, including Mandrax and dagga. Additionally, an ad-hoc roadblock along the Grasmere Toll Plaza and N14 freeway in Diepsloot led to the arrest of 14 undocumented persons. A further 28 suspects were detained across the district for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Suspects to Face Court Proceedings
All arrested individuals are expected to appear in various Magistrate’s Courts in the coming days.
Johannesburg District Commissioner Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka reaffirmed the police’s commitment to maintaining public safety, stating: “We will intensify these operations to ensure that our communities are and feel safe.”
The operations underscore the police’s continued efforts to curb crime through coordinated law enforcement strategies.
