The trial of three individuals accused of stealing over $580,000 from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in February 2020 has been postponed to 15 September by the Modimolle Regional Court. The delay was granted to allow one of the accused, Floriana Joseph, time to give birth, as she is reportedly heavily pregnant.
The Accused and Allegations
The three suspects—Imanuwela David, Floriana Joseph, and Ndilinasho Joseph—are alleged to have broken into Ramaphosa’s farm and stolen the substantial sum, which had been concealed inside a sofa. David, labeled the alleged mastermind, faces additional charges of money laundering, while the Joseph siblings are charged with theft and breaking in.
David remains in custody after being denied bail, while Floriana and Ndilinasho Joseph were previously released on bail.
Reason for Postponement
Floriana Joseph’s lawyer requested the adjournment, citing her pregnancy and imminent delivery. The court granted a three-month postponement, rescheduling proceedings to September, with the trial expected to extend into October.
Legal Strategies and Witnesses
The state has lined up 23 witnesses, while the Joseph siblings plan to call five, including themselves. David’s legal team indicated readiness but suggested they might later seek a telecommunications expert to analyze alleged communications between the accused.
Background on Floriana Joseph’s Role
Floriana, a former employee at the farm, is accused of tipping off the others about the hidden money, facilitating the theft. She was previously allowed to breastfeed her infant while in custody before being granted bail.
The case has drawn significant attention due to its high-profile nature and allegations of money laundering linked to David. Investigators claim he used illicit funds to purchase vehicles and property, with possible ties to Namibian nationals illegally residing in South Africa.
The trial is now set to proceed in September, with further developments expected as witnesses testify.
