As winter approaches, gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers can look forward to a burst of green inspiration at the Winter Garden Fair, set to take place on 24-25 May 2025 at the scenic Vuleka Centre in Botha’s Hill. Now in its third year, the event promises to be the most vibrant yet, featuring an array of growers, landscapers, artisans, and expert talks—all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

A New Home for the Garden Fair

Originally held in Pietermaritzburg, the fair found a new home at the Vuleka Centre last year after its previous venues became unavailable. According to event organizer and director Bradley Raath, the move has been a resounding success.

“The venue is just made for this type of garden fair,” Raath said. “It’s peaceful, surrounded by nature, and offers ample space for vendors and visitors. Last year, the feedback was so positive that vendors immediately asked for a winter edition too.”

What to Expect in 2025

This year’s fair will showcase:

  • A diverse mix of vendors, from plant growers to water-wise gardening suppliers.

  • Live music and delicious food, creating a relaxed, festival-like atmosphere.

  • Expert advice, including a pop-up stand by renowned gardening guru Tanya Visser’s team (though Visser herself will be at the Chelsea Flower Show).

  • Focus on sustainability, with exhibitors highlighting water-wise solutions and small-space gardening techniques.

Raath emphasized the growing trend of urban and container gardening, making the fair accessible even to those without large outdoor spaces. “People are moving into flats and complexes, so we’re adapting—showing how you can grow your own food and create beautiful gardens in small areas,” he said.

A Fair for Everyone

One of Raath’s standout memories from last year was seeing a wheelchair-bound visitor quietly admiring the hills, underscoring the event’s inclusive and tranquil vibe. “It’s not just about plants—it’s about coming together, enjoying nature, and leaving inspired,” he added.
