Two of South Africa’s most wanted cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout with police in Boksburg earlier today. The suspects, linked to multiple violent heists across the country, engaged officers in a fierce gun battle before being neutralized.
Linked to Multiple Crimes
According to police officials, the suspects were connected to several high-profile CIT robberies, including a May 2nd incident in Mandeni where a G4S security guard was shot and killed. Authorities also tied them to a recent heist in the North West province.
Provincial Commissioner General Tommy Mthombeni, briefing the media, revealed that the suspects were part of a larger transnational crime syndicate, with some members already arrested outside South Africa.
Proactive Policing Measures
The police emphasized their intensified efforts to combat CIT robberies, deploying specialized tactical teams and collaborating with private security firms and metro police.
“We have proactive measures in place, including technical response teams and intelligence operations,” said General Mthombeni. “Our goal is to stabilize the situation and prevent further attacks.”
Scene Under Investigation
The crime scene remains active as forensic teams process evidence. Police recovered rifles, including AK-47s, from the suspects. Neighbors described the men as seemingly ordinary, with little indication of their alleged criminal activities.
Authorities expect to release further details as the investigation progresses.
