Off-duty firefighter Mxolisi Prince Masuku, 32, became a local hero after rescuing a family of three from a sinking car near Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong, Gauteng last Sunday.
Masuku, who had just finished a night shift, witnessed the vehicle swerve, roll, and plunge into a flooded area. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water, pulling the mother and her two children to safety despite the rising water levels.
“I didn’t think about being off-duty—I just acted,” said Masuku, who is set to receive a bravery award for his actions. The family survived with minor injuries.
The incident has sparked admiration in the community, with many praising Masuku’s selflessness. “It’s everyone’s job to help,” he emphasized, urging others to step up in emergencies.
A lifelong firefighter, Masuku hopes his actions inspire more young people, especially in townships, to consider the profession. “Service doesn’t stop when the shift ends,” he said.
