The family of Simphiwe Biyela, a 17-year-old Musi High School learner who was stabbed to death in Pimville, Soweto, has expressed deep anguish after the Lenasia Magistrates Court granted bail to the young men accused of killing him.

“We have not even buried our son, but the accused are already out on bail. We are hurting,” a devastated family member said.

The decision has sparked outrage in the community, with learners from Pimville preparing to march on Friday morning in protest before being calmed. Many students are angered that the three accused are free while their fellow learner is dead.

“When is justice going to be served? We’ve been screaming for help from the MEC, from community leaders, saying we are not safe. It’s unfortunate that this had to happen,” said one frustrated protester.

The Department of Education has since assured the public that the case is now a priority. Education MEC Matome Chiloane urged patience, asking the community to allow the legal process to unfold.

“We’ve made it a high-priority case because there was a feeling that it was being mishandled,” Chiloane said. “I contacted the commissioner to ensure this case is elevated, monitored, and guided to its logical conclusion.”

Simphiwe Biyela’s funeral is set to take place on Sunday. Meanwhile, the accused are expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court in July.
