The High Court in Mthatha, a crucial legal hub serving over 20 rural towns, has been hit by shocking allegations of corruption, with court officials accused of soliciting bribes for basic services.
According to reports, at least nine officials—ranging from junior typists to senior managers—are under investigation for allegedly demanding payments from lawyers and litigants to locate files, process court orders, and expedite administrative tasks. The scandal has sent shockwaves through the legal community, raising concerns about the integrity of the justice system in the region.
Legal Fraternity Expresses Outrage
The National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) confirmed it had received complaints about delays and inefficiencies but was unaware the issues stemmed from systemic extortion.
“We were aware of complaints about missing files and delayed court orders, but we never knew it had reached a point where officials were being paid to perform their duties,” a NADEL representative said. “This is a serious betrayal of trust.”
The Mthatha Society of Advocates, while distancing itself from administrative processes, condemned the corruption in the strongest terms. “We condemn bribery and corruption in our courts. It undermines the rule of law and public confidence,” a spokesperson said.
Calls for Whistleblowers and Reforms
Authorities have urged anyone with concrete evidence to come forward, emphasizing the need for factual investigations rather than rumors. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has opened a criminal case, with police and internal investigators working in tandem.
In response to the scandal, the Office of the Chief Justice announced that the Mthatha High Court will soon implement an online case management system to reduce human interference and curb manipulation. The digital system, already being rolled out nationwide, is expected to enhance transparency.
Public Trust at Stake
Legal experts warn that such corruption erodes faith in the judiciary, particularly for rural communities reliant on the High Court for justice. “Our democracy depends on courts delivering justice without bribes or fraud,” a legal representative stressed.
As investigations continue, the legal community has called for urgent reforms to restore confidence in the institution meant to uphold justice—not exploit those who seek it.
