In a major effort to address the backlog of cleft lip and palate surgeries, Operation Smile, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and key support from Life Healthcare, has launched an intensive surgical program this week. The initiative, running until Sunday, is expected to provide life-changing procedures for an estimated 40 children.

A Transformative Initiative

Cleft lip and palate conditions affect children worldwide, with one child born with the condition every three minutes, according to medical experts. While first-world countries typically correct the condition within 18 months of birth, many South African children face long delays due to limited access to specialized surgery.

Many parents here are eager for their children to undergo this procedure, but there’s also understandable nervousness, especially for first-time patients,” the Newzroom Africa reporter noted.

A Personal Journey of Resilience

The report featured an emotional testimony from a young man who underwent corrective surgery at 19 after years of bullying and social exclusion.

“Growing up was very difficult,” he shared. “Children and even teachers made jokes about me. I didn’t even know what my condition was called until I researched it myself.”

After multiple failed attempts to secure surgery through public hospitals, he finally received his operation in 2018 after responding to an Operation Smile campaign. “After the surgery, I walked with confidence for the first time. It changed everything,” he said, smiling.

Tapo now encourages parents to take the opportunity for their children, assuring them that the 45-minute procedure can dramatically alter their child’s future.

A Collaborative Medical Effort

The surgical mission brings together dentists, surgeons, and medical professionals to ensure successful outcomes. Operation Smile focuses on children aged six months to 12 years, aiming to prevent the long-term emotional and physical struggles Tapo endured.

As the surgeries continue, parents and medical staff remain hopeful. “This is more than just a medical procedure—it’s giving these children a chance at a brighter, more confident future,” Shawana concluded.

The initiative underscores the critical need for accessible healthcare and the profound impact of collaborative efforts in transforming lives.
