Angry community members in Roodepoort are demanding answers following the brutal murder of an 11-year-old boy in the Fleurhof apartment complex. The shocking discovery has left residents in disbelief, with many calling for all locked doors in the building to be opened as they seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The incident has sparked outrage, particularly because the apartment block was considered a relatively safe space for children. Community members are now questioning how such a tragedy could occur in a supposedly secure environment.
A Violation of Children’s Rights
Speaking on the issue, Dr. Shaheda Omar, director of the Teddy Bear Foundation, expressed deep distress over the incident, calling it a “gross violation” of children’s safety and constitutional rights.
“It’s not only shocking, it’s disturbing and unacceptable,” Dr. Omar said. “An innocent, defenseless child has lost his life, and there are so many unanswered questions. This sends a distressing message to other children and families about their vulnerability.”
He emphasized the alarming statistic that, on average, three children are murdered daily in South Africa. The lack of immediate answers in this case has only heightened anxiety and fear among residents.
Where Did Ubuntu Go?
Reflecting on the breakdown of community values, Dr. Omar lamented the loss of Ubuntu—the African philosophy of collective care and responsibility.
“Growing up, we used to say it takes a village to raise a child. Neighbors looked out for each other’s children. But today, we’ve lost that spirit,” he said. “We need to go back to basics—your child is my child. We must all take responsibility for protecting every child in our communities.”
He urged society to be more vigilant, questioning why a child may be alone, showing signs of distress, or in potentially dangerous situations.
Calls for a National Emergency
With September being Child Protection Month, Dr. Omar criticized the recurring nature of such tragedies, noting that discussions around child safety often fade until the next horrific incident.
“We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect different results,” he said. “Child protection must be declared a national emergency. The presidency, government departments, civil society, and communities must work together to address this crisis.”
He also called for better-resourced law enforcement, specialized rapid-response teams for missing children, and stricter protocols to ensure perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
Community Reactions
Viewers and residents have expressed their frustration and grief over the incident. Some comments included:
-
“It’s high time perpetrators rot in jail if found.”
-
“Community policing forums must be more active—we can’t rely solely on SAPS.”
-
“This highlights the urgent need for stronger child safety measures.”
A Mother’s Unimaginable Pain
As the investigation continues, the victim’s mother is left to grapple with an unbearable loss. Dr. Omar offered his condolences, acknowledging that no words could ease her suffering.
“Losing a child is a fate worse than death. All we can do is pray for her strength and ensure the perpetrator is caught so no other child suffers the same fate,” he said.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests, but pressure is mounting for justice. The community remains on high alert, determined to prevent another tragedy.
