Jubilant fans, friends, and family packed the airport to welcome home South Africa’s world champion 4x400m relay team after their historic victory at the World Athletics Championships in China.
The team, including teenagers Leendert Koekemoer and Udeme Okon, was greeted with euphoria as supporters cheered their gold medal triumph. The win not only placed South Africa atop the medal standings ahead of sprint giants like the USA and Jamaica but also earned them the title of “Best Team” in a global poll by World Athletics.
“This medal gives me strength and power,” said one athlete. “I don’t see myself as a loser—we won, and now I know I’m among the best in the world.”
Teammates credited their success to unity and motivation, with one saying, “We left our hearts on that track in China, running for South Africa and for each other.”
With a strong foundation in place, the young squad is already looking ahead to future victories.
