A protest march is underway in East London, with demonstrators demanding that controversial Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso leave the country. The march, organized by local clergy, community members, and students, began at Buffalo Street and is proceeding toward the courthouse.
Protesters, including mothers and religious leaders, expressed outrage over Omotoso’s past sexual assault allegations, despite his April acquittal. They argue that his presence in South Africa poses a threat to communities, particularly women and children.
A petition, prepared by the clergy and supported by Walter Sisulu University and the University of Fort Hare, calls for Omotoso’s deportation and the closure of his church. “We don’t need such leaders in our country,” said one clergy member.
Authorities, including city police, have been notified, and organizers plan to formally submit their demands to the court. The march highlights ongoing tensions over gender-based violence and accountability in religious institutions.
