A violent cash-in-transit heist attempt turned chaotic in Thokoza on Tuesday, leaving one suspect severely injured while ten others managed to escape following a shootout with police.
According to authorities, the suspects targeted a Fidelity Cash Solutions truck, ramming it with a silver BMW in an attempt to stop the vehicle. A fierce gun battle erupted between the suspects and police before the assailants fled in three getaway cars, abandoning the BMW at the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported a grisly scene, with forensic teams recovering what appeared to be a severed limb near the cash van. The injured suspect’s condition remains unclear, though police have not confirmed any fatalities at this stage.
“No cash was stolen during the attempted robbery,” a police spokesperson stated. “The suspects were forced to flee under heavy fire from responding officers.”
Forensic investigators combed the area before allowing tow trucks to remove the damaged vehicles, signaling the conclusion of the initial evidence-gathering process.
Local authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue. Police are yet to release further details but confirmed that no arrests have been made.
This marks the latest in a string of cash-in-transit heists in Gauteng, raising concerns over escalating brazen criminal activity.
