After months of enduring appalling living conditions due to persistent sewage spillages, Diamond Park residents have welcomed the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s intervention. The municipality has procured a truck and enlisted sanitation experts to address the ongoing crisis.
Residents, who have long suffered from health hazards and unbearable stench, expressed cautious optimism. Elsie Ntlhaile, a longtime resident receiving treatment for tuberculosis, says the unsanitary conditions have worsened her health. “I’m always sick. I’ve complained to authorities, but nothing was done until I ended up in hospital,” she lamented.
Earlier this month, Cooperative Governance MEC Bentley Vass visited the area, urging an interim solution while the municipality works on a long-term fix. Municipal Manager Thapelo Matlala confirmed that a sanitation team will be stationed in Diamond Park for a month to diagnose and swiftly resolve issues.
While the municipality denies claims of systemic service delivery failures, residents hope this marks the beginning of a permanent solution.
