Ongoing disruptive operations targeting illegal mining activities in hotspot areas have once again yielded positive results.
A multi-disciplinary team deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi arrested four suspects and recovered suspected unpolished diamonds during an operation conducted in and around the Koingnaas mining area near Kleinsee on Tuesday, 15 April 2025.
The operation was initiated following intelligence received about a vehicle allegedly transporting illegal miners from the Koingnaas mining area.
Acting on this information, the team established strategic observation points at the Komaggas/Soebatsfontein intersection and the Noup gate in Koingnaas.
The vehicle in question was identified and intercepted on the Koingnaas/Kleinsee road. A comprehensive search of the vehicle and its occupants led to the discovery of the unpolished diamonds.
Four suspects, aged between 27 and 55, were arrested for possession of unpolished diamonds.
In addition to the diamonds, a white Toyota Hilux bakkie, believed to be used in the commission of the crime was also seized.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Springbok Magistrate’s Court shortly.
