A Multi-Disciplinary Police Operation led to a successful arrest of a 25-year-old male suspect wanted for the murder of KwaDukuza Municipality Crime Prevention Unit – Superintendent Arumugam on Monday, 11 November 2024.
KwaDukuza Serious and Violent Crimes Unit in collaboration with other role players successfully arrested the suspect after an investigation led them to KwaMashu Hostel and Thubelihle Informal Settlement in Melmoth, the suspect was arrested at Melmoth, and taken to his residence at the KwaMashu Informal Settlement, where murder weapon – a the 9mm Taurus Pistol was recovered with the serial number filled off, along with two magazines and 32 live rounds of ammunition were recovered.
On the day of the murder, Monday, 4 November 2024, the suspect had boarded a Taxi from KwaDukuza, the suspect robbed the taxi driver of R2500 and four passengers of their cellphones at gunpoint on the N2 near Groutville RTI Offices in the KwaDukuza Policing Precinct.
Due to the taxi parked incorrectly on the Bridge next to Groutville RTI, KwaDukuza Municipality Crime Prevention Unit – Superintendent Arumugam had approached the taxi and was fatally shot by the suspect.
The driver fled the scene, and the suspect drove the taxi into the Thembeni area, in KwaDukuza and abandoned the taxi with the passengers in the vehicle.
The suspect has been charged for the following counts at KwaDukuza SAPS: Murder, Carjacking, Armed Robbery and the following counts at KwaMashu SAPS: Unlawful Possession of Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
The suspect will appear in both KwaDukuza and KwaMashu Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 13 November 2024.
