Threats, defamation, and obscenities are serious offences, even in the digital realm where anonymity can provide a false sense of security. Recent events endured by South Africa’s “Good Things Guy”, Brent Lindeque, have demonstrated that those who hide behind screens to harass and threaten others are not beyond the reach of justice.

Since the beginning of the year, Brent Lindeque has been enduring a private nightmare. For the last couple of months, he faced relentless harassment from a stalker he humorously dubbed the “unhinged wish-version of a Baby Reindeer.”

This individual bombarded Brent with vitriolic messages through emails, Facebook, and Twitter. Using fake addresses, the messages were constant and relentless, sometimes even tagging Brent’s clients in posts. It only ended when he finally confronted the stalker’s fake Twitter account to tell him that he finally knew who the stalker was, and would be laying charges against him.

“I haven’t been able to talk about it publicly (until now), but I have had a stalker – like a real one – who has harassed me with threatening emails and messages. Most days multiple times. They even sent death threats,” Brent shared, shedding light on the emotional turmoil he endured. Despite the anonymity the stalker attempted to maintain through fake email addresses and nameless social media accounts, a dedicated team comprising IT experts and a legal team comprising Maxine Clement from Dolata Clement & Co and Gillian Benson have helped “crack the case”. It was then up to the courts to lay a protection order against him, and even though the wheels of justice turn slowly, after seven weeks of waiting, it is now official. This person’s misguided belief in their “internet invisibility” crumbled when the interim protection order was served on them on July 8, 2024, with a court date set for July 25. The case was concluded the very next day when a protection order was issued against them, with extra protection parameters, and a warrant for their arrest was issued should they break any of the conditions. Now, they can no longer inflict harm on Brent.

The relentless harassment Brent faced had a severe impact on his mental health, illustrating how damaging stalking and bullying can be. Enduring constant threats and insults, Brent experienced a profound emotional toll that infiltrated his daily life. Each hateful message chipped away at his sense of security and well-being, fostering a growing sense of anxiety and dread. The constant barrage of hate took a toll on his spirit, leading to dark thoughts no one should have to entertain.

Victims of bullying and harassment often experience a range of psychological effects, including depression, anxiety, and a sense of helplessness. The invasive nature of stalking can lead to chronic stress, sleep disturbances, and a pervasive feeling of being unsafe. For Brent, the overwhelming negativity he faced not only disrupted his peace of mind but also affected his personal and professional life.

“Some days have been the hardest to face. The barrage of messages has sat in my peripheral, but the vitriol and toxicity have been a heavy weight to carry,” Brent revealed. The emotional burden of such relentless harassment is immense, often leading victims to question their self-worth and feel isolated from those around them.

However, the story doesn’t end in despair.

Justice has prevailed.

“Why am I sharing this now? Because I finally feel safe again. Because bullying and harassment should not and will not be tolerated. Because even if you think you’re anonymous on the internet, you are not. Because being a kak human is not the flex you think it is,” Brent proclaimed, hoping that by sharing his story, it would send a strong message to other cyber-bullies.

There is no space for harassment, cyber-bullying or any hate in this world. And as proven by Brent’s story, no one is anonymous on the internet, and everyone is accountable for their actions.
