A Unisa law lecturer called whites cockroaches on social media, has “received a serious warning” by his employers.
Martin Ramotshela Unisa spokesperson, said the university found Benny Morota was wrong and that his behavior does not match the values of the institution.
“The necessary interventions were made by the university and the employee was sharply reprimanded by his supervisor and vice-chancellor for his statements,” said Ramotshela.
“As it stands now, he had a warning and if he transgresses again, the university will not hesitate to take strong action against him. Unisa condemns this behavior strongly. ”
Morota was charged by one of his own students of hate speech after he made the comments on Facebook in January. He wrote: “I hate white people and they must go back to wherever they come from or alternatively to hell.”
He later defiantly added he was waiting for his employer to charge him. The student said in an anonymous letter to Prof. Mandla Makhanya, vice-chancellor, that she was “shocked and very upset” about his comments.
“I’m a black person and believe in a democratic society. I do not believe it is right to voice racist remarks and incite hate speech, “she said.
Shortly after his first Facebook entry, Morota posted the following statement, “Educated blacks have an attitude of contempt toward their own black people because the education system taught them to admire all light skin races in the world and despise the African”.
When a certain Harald Sitta asked him if he was serious he hit back with, “idnt entertain white cockroach like yourself…idnt understand why you interfere in my black business…Fuck you pink white murderer…Enjoy the blood wealth of our people, your time to pay with your white skin is emmenent (sic)”
Moroto reported in June that he does not hate white people, but sometimes a debate can lead to racial friction.
According Morota, he made the comment because a white man has made persistent racist remarks on each of his posts.
Martin Viljoen, spokesman for the University, said a student who recently joined a WhatsApp group of protesting students referred to as k ***** s is under investigation. The student, a resident of the Metanoia residence, has agreed to leave the residence.
Luvuyo Menziwa, an SRC of the University Of Pretoria (UP) recently over social media threatened that he would “kill all demon possessed white people” has yet to have a hearing. He was dismissed from the student council after making the humiliating remarks. Anna-Retha Bouwer, UP spokesman, said an indictment was opened and a date must still be set for a hearing.
