Arrested former Student Representative Council leader at the University of the Witwatersrand University (Wits) and #FeesMustFall protest leader, Mcebo Dlamini, on Tuesday said he will continue “fighting for free education”.

Mcebo made his comments to journalists at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s court before proceedings in his bail application began.

The 32-year-old, who was arrested at his Wits residence in the early hours on Sunday, faces charges of public violence, theft, malicious damage to property and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Dlamini said: “The struggle continues, in my view I think they are trying to silence us and delegitimise us, probably trying to attack our dignity and integrity … the call is genuine and the students must continue with the fight.

“Some of these things make us very strong. More than anything I’m happy that it was me who went there (prison) than the other student. As a leader you always lead by example.”

On Monday Dlamini asked the court to release him on bail immediately because he needed to write an assessment test, but the magistrate was not moved.

Dlamini, who has been at the forefront of demands to shutdown Wits until free education is implemented, was whisked away by police after they found out that his matter was scheduled for later today.

The accused first appeared on Monday and had his bail application postponed to Tuesday to verify his residential address.
