A 29-year-old man is expected to appear before Ubombo Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday for possession of rhino horn.

This comes after Mkhuze police on Thursday arrested the suspect at around 2pm at Mashibisa store in Mkhuze for possession of a rhino horn.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, said the police were following information about a suspect who was carrying a black and yellow bag.

“On their arrival, when confronting the suspect they did preliminary investigation and that where they discovered that he was carrying a rhino horn,” Zwane said.

“He was arrested and the case of possession of a rhino horn was opened at Mkhuze police station for further investigations.”

As part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Mkhuze has one of the biggest game reserves in the province with a large population of rhinos.

KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa, applauded Mkhuze police for arresting the suspect and said the arrest would send a clear message to other poachers who were still at large.
