A 36-year-old man is expected to appear in the Escourt Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal for possession of an unlicensed rifle and ammunition, police said on Friday.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, said the man was arrested on Wednesday night after the police made a visit to his home following a tip-off of unlicensed firearms in the Drycott area.
“When police arrived at the suspect’s premise, they found the suspect and an unlicensed R1 rifle with two rounds of ammunition,” Zwane said.
“The suspect is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”
Zwane said the rifle would be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it had been involved in the commission of crime anywhere in the country.
KZN acting provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa, applauded the community for working together with the police in effecting the arrest.
