A 24-year-old restaurant cashier was arrested on Thursday in Hopefield, in the Western Cape for allegedly compromising customers’ bank card data using an illegal point of sale device, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said.
“The arrest follow several complaints in the past two months from victims who suffered substantial financial losses after visiting the same restaurant, the resultant probe by the Commercial wing of the Hawks, resulted in the arrest of a Zimbabwean National, believed to be responsible for the alleged illicit operation,” Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.
One unauthorised point of sale device was found in the suspect’s possession as well as two bank cards with questionable authenticity.
Ramovha said the suspect was expected to appear in the Hopefield Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
