A 30-year-old man was arrested on charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping in the ‎Fairbreeze area, in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

“The suspect used [instant messenger] WhatsApp to lure women by promising them jobs then [he] raped and robed them. The suspect promised two women jobs and took them into a secluded area at the sugarcane fields where he tied up one of the victim’s while terrorising the other,” police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

“The victim managed to escape and alerted the police. On arrival they found that the suspect had escaped. He continued with his evil deeds unaware that he was under the watchful eye of the police. He was caught in the act while luring another victim with the same modus operandi. The suspect would rape victims and rob them of their belongings including cellphones and use them into luring [other women].”

Gwala said he was arrested on Thursday and was taken to Tongaat police station. He is expected to appear in court soon on charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa urged other women who had been victims to come forward and report the incidents.

“We also advise all women to refrain from believing into any job promises from strangers,” he said.
