While police were in hot pursuit of a wanted suspect in Voissen Road, Gelvandale yesterday, 14 July 2016, they were spontaneously bombarded with stones thrown by some members of the community.
Two police Constables who were chasing the suspect on foot sustained injuries. The suspect managed to escape. A 25-year-old man was arrested for public violence.
Attacks on the police will under no circumstances be tolerated.
There is no justification whatsoever for this type of conduct by members of the community.
The SAPS will act decisively within the parameters of the law when subjected to attack.
Police officials are working tirelessly to bring safety and stability to the communities of Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale and to be attacked by that very community is extremely disappointing.
‘We strongly warn the community against committing acts such as this. The SAPS cannot restore peace and order while under attack, it is simply unacceptable,’ said Maj Gen Rabie, Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
