Commandos stormed a restaurant where gunmen were
holding about 20 hostages including foreigners in the Bangladeshi
capital Saturday.

Gunshots and explosions were heard after the troopers entered the
restaurant where about a dozen terrorists were said to have attacked.

One foreigner escaped in the melee, according to Rapid Action
Battalion spokesman Mizanur Rahman. He gave no further details.

The gunmen entered the Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant at about 8:45
pm Friday evening as customers were eating.

The tense standoff carried into early morning, after two police
officers were killed in a shootout with the militants in Dhaka’s
diplomatic district of Gulshan.

Foreign hostages including several Italians and one or more Japanese
citizen, diplomats said.

The Islamic State organization reportedly claimed responsibility for
the attack. Thousands of alleged radical militants had been arrested
in Bangladesh in recent weeks, local media reported.
